Shoes wage war on feet

According to New York Magazine, the shoe industry has been killing our feet for years!

To back up their claim, they have these awesome—yet creepy—photographs of painted on shoes:

So here’s the rundown: Thousands of years of evolution have pretty much perfected our feet and the way we walk. By saddling ourselves with these crazy contraptions known simply as shoes, we end up walking wrong. As a result our feet are in terrible shape, our joints are screwed up, and we’re poor from spending money on shoes.

It makes sense to me. With padding under our feet we are going to walk differently than we would otherwise. This puts different stresses on our knees and hips that we would likely avoid if we had to really feel every step we took.

But couldn’t they have told me this before I bought $125 Dansko clogs?

So what’s the solution you say? Well, the article says to walk barefoot as much as possible, and when you have to wear shoes, try to rotate them as much as possible. Don’t give your feet the chance to get used to any particular way of walking that might be bad for you. Lucky for me, I’ve already been doing that months now.
