What to do with Iraqi oil money

“The Iraqi government now has tens of billions of dollars at its disposal to fund large scale reconstruction projects,” said Mr. Levin, who is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in the statement. “It is inexcusable for U.S. taxpayers to continue to foot the bill for projects the Iraqis are fully capable of funding themselves. We should not be paying for Iraqi projects, while Iraqi oil revenues continue to pile up in the bank,” Mr. Levin said.
How dare we pay to rebuild Iraq after already paying through the teeth to destroy it!
In all seriousness, I’m not sure what to think about this. It would seem criminal for the Iraqi government to not spend all of the money they could on reconstruction and security. At the same time, I don’t necessarily think that means we should be spending less to help them rebuild.
Even if we withdraw our military, I think it’s our responsibility to help the Iraqis rebuild what we’ve worked to destroy for nearly two decades.

I think it is our responsibility to help them rebuild. That said, I think that if they truly want us out quicker, they should use some of that budget surplus to accelerate the process.
