    Your sarcasm duly noted.

You’ve worked in the news. How do organizations tell if a story is popular or that they will extend their coverage? Is it copies sold? # hits? Because like other stories that get hyperbolically blown up by the media (Tim Russert) I’m just tired of it.

Is there a legitimate audience out there that responds to these stories or does the media blindly latch on and feed the process themselves?

  2. Chris says:

I can’t really answer your question with any kind of authority. I would say though that it’s a combination of what people want to cover, and preferences they project onto their audience.

“I think Favre is a good story, and I think my readers do too.”

Plus, you have to deal with competition. CNN/SI would be loathe to let ESPN out-Favre them.

Yeah except you know the nightmare will continue. I mean, Farve is going to the NY media. ESPN is going to show Farve highlights like crazy since he will be out of his normal uniform. We won’t be done with the most overrated quarterback since Joe Namath until he breaks his hip on the field in 20 years. I look forward to the Pats/Jets games.

  4. Ted says:

    Pressure’s on Aaron Rodgers.

  5. Ian says:

I think its more on the coach if Rodgers fails. Rodgers can only gain from this. Unless he is just absolutely awful, he can be a backup again somewhere. The coach chose Rodgers over Favre, which I honestly think was a good decision, but it puts him in hot water if Rodgers fails.

  6. Chris says:

Yeah, the pressure really is on the Green Bay management at this point. They’ve given up one of the best QBs evah for Rodgers.

Green Bay fans are gonna be pissed unless Rodgers gets them just as far as Favre did last year, or if Favre completely flames out in NY.

  7. Ted says:

Ian and Chris I think you’re right. It’s an excellent opportunity for him.

If he can come close to extrapolating his career stats as a backup into consistent performances as a starter (something like 75% completion, 105 QB rating), I think the fans will be quite pleased.

  8. Ian says:

I don’t expect Favre to exactly flame out in NY, but I certainly don’t expect him to do well. I will be really impressed if the Jets make the playoffs. Pennington wasn’t that bad and he knew the offense. When he was healthy the Jets offense was decent. Favre doesn’t know the Jets system at all. The receivers aren’t exactly top notch either. I predict an 8-8 finish.
