A few points I will challenge here:

The first that American public schools do not prepare people for the workforce, as evidenced by the fact those with high school degrees can barely afford to pay their family. This I think is a case of correlation not causation. Wages have not kept up with inflation for quite some time for the lower and middle classes. This isn't caused by a failing education system. I agree that our education system could use some improvement, but I sincerely believe it is still a very great public good.

Next I would challenge that the American Dream has vanished in the last few years. I don't believe that the dream as typically stated has remained present, I would just say it never existed to begin with. Its not like poor people were pulling themselves up by their bootstraps left and right and becoming millionaires ten years ago. The American Dream has always been a nationalistic fantasy.

Much of this talk about the disappearing dream and the decline of America is cooked up for political gain. I am not naive enough to think we are not experiencing hard times or that we will attain some sort of previous standard of whatever metric you wish to use. I simply think its too easy and far too common to hear people say that now is worse than then. Everyone always talks about how much better things used to be and how bad they are now thanks to whatever group they want to complain about.

Its been some time since I read Freakonomics, but I do seem to recall they acknowledge you need a certain amount of money to even be considered as a candidate. I don't think they were arguing that money doesn't win elections, simply that you can't actually "buy" an election. Ultimately what you need to win are votes, which money can indirectly help with by increasing exposure.

I think the situation is even more complex than presented here. For example, many States are known to vote republican and only republican. So the democratic party isn't going to spend as much on a candidate in Idaho because its not a wise use of their money. Furthermore, constituents are not likely to donate money to a candidate in such a situation if they perceive their chances as nonexistent.

Romney isn't succeeding just because of money. Many of his opponents in the primaries simply are not viable. Herman Cain was very popular, but it was clear he would not win in a race with Obama due to his past. Gingrich is similarly loaded with baggage. Bachmann is not exactly a favorite of moderates, nor is Santorum. I look at at it differently. Romney is their most qualified and delectable candidate, yet he is only pulling in 30% of the vote. He should be crushing the others based on his spending, but hes not.

That should be delectable but I am having trouble scrolling up. This text box is not Kindle friendly.

Thanks for the opinions Chris! You did seem kind of burned out; recharging sounds like a good idea. I'll be looking out for a brand new and improved Why We Worry in the future! Until then, peace, and face front!

Batam island, April 22th 2011

In my opinion, What the U.S. owes China US$1.4 trillion is not so frightened the US citizens as long as the money is used for the sake of a good and responsible investment by the US Government perfectly! At the other side, besides its responsibility needs a good report also needs a good transparency to China as the money lender! I think, better the US Government reduce all the expenses: The wars, international politics and all kind of squandering! Most of all, The Good Lord JESUS CHRIST will bless this US country appropriate to the prayers of US citizens.
